In business, sometimes it's helpful to think beyond the workday when trying to get ahead. There are ways to establish and build relationships with clients that can happen elsewhere, like over a few rounds of golf. This works out well unless you aren't a golfer.
So, if you're no athlete and your client wants to meet over 9 holes of golf to talk shop, what do you do? It's a quite a dilemma, because you want to say yes to keep his business, but you also don't want to make a fool of yourself.
When you call to accept, be sure to be jovial. You may want to own up to your inability to play. They may appreciate your candor and be more forgiving of a bad performance on the links if you admit it up front.
If you don't know how to play golf before the outing there's still ways to make the event worthwhile and less embarrassing.
You may want to try to learn the fundamentals of the game as quickly as possible. That way you'll feel less foolish when you get on the links. You still won't be a stellar player but you'll feel less inadequate if you at least know the lingo.
Your best bet is to find a golf pro and take a few lessons. Their hourly rates are usually reasonable and can range from $8 to $100 if they are popular.
You may even find a licensed instructor that is offering special daily or package rates.
Give your instructor all the details about your upcoming golf game. And explain about your lack of experience. It will help him equip you with the basics to get through a game without embarrassing yourself, too much.
In the end, your score isn't what's important. It's bonding with your client, having fun and furthering your career that really matters.
