Fun, Amusing, and Amazing Facts in Sports

Sports trivia has become the equivalent of everyday knowledge. If you ask a sports fan, he or she may know more than the common person, but everyone knows certain things about the sports world, like Lakers guard Ervin Johnson's nickname (Magic), George Herman Ruth's nickname, and many other small facts in the sports world.

Interestingly enough, there are plenty of obscure facts out there that happen to be just as impressive, interesting, and entertaining, as any of the more obvious ones. Let's have a look at some of these examples. It'll give you some great bait for parties.

During a game in 1972 between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the St. Louis Blues, the Penguins scored a total of 5 goals in a period of two minutes and seven seconds, the most ever scored in such a short time.

People admire many baseball players and what they do at the home run derby every All-Star break, but did you know that Babe Ruth once hit 125 home runs in an hour during batting practice? This is over triple anything ever hit in the home run derby. Can you imagine how much that could drain an athlete? That's over two per minute!

How about this one? Which sport do more people participate in than any other in the world? I bet you're thinking something like soccer, or basketball, or even running. It's not any of those. Who would have guessed that it's fishing?

The longest rally in tennis history occurred between Howard Kinsey and R. Roark. This rally lasted for 78 minutes and spanned 2001 shots. Eventually, the rally ended because Kinsey had to give someone a tennis lesson.

Every year in baseball, over 900,000 baseballs are used during the course of a season. Almost enough to pay one player's salary!

Almost as interesting is the fact that over 41,000 tennis balls are used each summer at the Wimbledon tennis championships. That's a lot of tennis.

The most watched basketball event ever? It brought in 75,000 fans, and it wasn't the NBA finals. It wasn't the Olympics either. In 1951, the Harlem Globetrotters came to Germany, setting an attendance record at the sold-out event.

The first hockey puck ever used in a game wasn't anything like your typical puck today. It was actually a piece of frozen cow manure.

Satchel Paige, a former Negro League baseball player, pitched at 59 years old as a Major League baseball pitcher. Many say he was one of the greatest pitchers to ever play the game.
