Golf Channel Network

The game of golf is one of the steadiest sports that have ever existed but its popularity rate is becoming evidently increasing in recent years. In fact, it has infiltrated its way onto mainstream television in order to ride in on this golf craze and phenomenon, which was initiated by the Golf Channel.
Joseph Gibbs, a native of Birmingham, Alabama is a cable and cellular entrepreneur, who hosted the'90 PGA Championship, which is one of the first professional golf tournament ever. Gibbs played host to the tournament for Arnold and Winnie Palmer. They eventually built a strong friendship that gave way to what was to become a 24-hour cable network that was devoted entirely for the sport.
Consequent upon a Gallup survey, which gave evidence of strong public interest in golf, Gibbs and his golf legend were convinced that assisted by golf lovers in general, the conceived golf channel could be a reality and would flourish.
The Golf Channel came into existence in'95 after the new corporate body managed to raise in excess of $80 million, well enough to lunch and finance the dream endeavor. The Golf Channel finally started with down 1000 subscribers, and debuted on'th January'95 with its first live telecast of Dubai Desert Classic golf tournament.
Since its initial launching, The Golf Channel has come a long way and become more and more popular. A great majority of satellite dish and cable networks now offer The Golf Channel in their lineup of channel offerings. During'99, this channel was also shown over Japan and Canada such that the entrepreneurs behind this program were able to regain their initial investment for the business venture.
For the die-hard golf enthusiasts, The Golf Channel is the best place to go for the latest news and programming that had to do with the sport. A show called "Golf Central" is telecast daily on the channel, while a variation of this called "College Central" is leaning more towards college level of the sport. Both shows highlight tournaments and showcase professionals sharing their insights on proper golfing techniques for the avid viewers.
The Golf Channel also partnered with a reality-base program, The Big Break. The main concept behind the show is to train aspiring golf professionals and be able to enter major golfing events such as PGA Tour and LPGA events. This also proved to be a success.
The Golf Channel, in 2005, helped sponsoring a special tournament of two-player teams, named 'Big Stakes' which doled out a largest ever prize money of $3,000,000 to the winning team, prize money being the largest in history of any golf event. The entry fee for this tournament was however a smashing $100,000 for a two-member team. Garth Mulroy and David Ping, professionals from mini-tour circuit, were the winners of the first prize that was split between the two.
So this is a history of two zealous persons, one an entrepreneur and the other a core golfer combining to give birth to 'The Golf Channel' which has now become a news source to many a household for their everyday golf news and this writer too is on the same boat. Along with us let me hope you too will love The Golf Channel.
