How To Improve Golf Swing Consistency

With over 30 million golfers in the United States alone, this is one sport that has not suffered too badly during a soft economy. What most people do not know is that only 10% of the people who play golf ever break 100 as their best score! If you play, you know that 100 is not a very competitive score. The challenge lies in one area and that is being able to repeat a good swing. This will show you how to improve golf swing consistency. What makes golf a unique sport is that you are only competing with yourself. It doesn't matter how well your competitors play, it only matters how you play. If you develop consistency in your swing, you will not only improve, the game will be much more enjoyable even if you do not play competitively.
Most of the consistency that you wish to develop comes from practice. However, without practicing the proper techniques, you will not improve, you will only create more inconsistency. There are several pretty simple concepts that you can learn on your own, but support from a Professional will help you ingrain them into your game. In fact, it is recommended that even when you have become proficient at playing, you should take a periodic lesson to assure that you are not developing any bad habits.
However, if you practice the wrong things, in the wrong way, then you will not gain in your game and in many cases you could actually become worse! Golf is a game of balance. It's balance before, during and after your swing. Once you get comfortable with your swing in balance, the results will be better than if you are not in balance.
Once you feel comfortable in this position, you will immediately have more confidence when approaching a shot. Simply stated, your weight should be focused on the inside of both of your feet as that will give some stability. You will want to feel as if your feet are firmly planted on the ground and that you have strength in your lower body. The larger muscles in your legs and back are the most important in a golf swing.
Your stance is how you get into balance. With your feet spread about at shoulders width, you are in a good starting position. Then with a slight bend of the knees and a little lean forward while focusing on your weight being towards the inner sides of your feet, you have attained an athletic position. A good position at address will also allow your larger muscles to play their correct part in your golf swing. Most consistency comes from comfort, so work on feeling comfortable as you approach the ball. In fact, to work on your balance, you don't even have to be playing or practicing. Just practice getting into a comfortable athletic position as you walk around your house or yard. It may look silly, but who cares?
Your grip is the next area to focus on to build a repeatable swing. It doesn't matter which grip you employ, it just must be the same, all of the time.And be sure not to choke the club! A loose grip allows you to generate more power as you approach the ball. Again, practice this while not at the range to develop a repeatable grip. Remember, comfort and consistency.
Lastly, believe it or not, ball position is as important as the above mentioned processes. For all of your shots, there is a place that the ball should be. Obviously, you cannot move the ball to satisfy this, so how you approach the ball is your next task. For tee shots with a wood, the ball should be placed very far forward in your stance. If you are right handed, this means that the ball should be positioned to have a straight line to your left instep. With irons the position will slowly come towards the middle of your stance. This will be determined by what type of shot you are planning to hit.
Lastly, whether you play to win or play for fun, the most consistent golfers will take time with a Professional. They are well schooled in all of shot fundamentals and even if your swing is great they will help you in other areas of the game and assure that you have not taken on any bad habits. So practice and learn how to become more consistent. There will generally be more days that you enjoy when playing this great game.
