How To Pick The Right Golf Iron

Posted by Connor Terry under: Golf .

For the beginning golfer there tends to be a problem when it comes to selecting the right golf iron for their next shot. Club selection is an essential part of the game and picking the wrong club will show up on your scorecard. In this particular article I will look at the basic mechanics of the golf iron, how to determine the distance and how much weather needs to be accounted for.

Every single golf iron in your club set would essentially go the same distance but the angle of the club face changes not only the distance but alters the flight path as well. A typical three iron has a degree angle around twenty one which encouraged the golf ball to fly at a lower height and for a longer distance. On the opposite end of the spectrum there is the nine iron which is around 41 degrees which will send the ball flying much harder and not as far as lowered numbered clubs.

A popular system to figure out how far your golf irons will travel for the beginning golfer is to spend some time at the local driving range with your five iron in hand. Make sure that you are keeping track of the yards your five iron is carrying and at the end of the session determine what the average is. As soon as you know the average we can then fill out the rest of the distances by adding ten yards of distance for every lower club so if your five iron distance is 150 yards this will make the four iron around 160 yards and so on. On the other side of the golf bag you need to subtract ten yards for each club so your six iron will be around 140 yards and so on. This distance system is not exactly perfect and once your swing become more refined the distances between clubs will increase.

The problem with club selection is that weather will have a huge impact on the iron that you select. If your seven iron is traveling 130 yards a head on wind is going to shorten this distance due to the high flight path of the golf ball. If this is the case chances are you will want to lose a lower club which does not fly as high and will hopefully be able to cover the desired distance.

It will take you time to figure out how to use your scoring irons in the right way and as your technique improves so will the distance on how far the ball will travel. At the beginning it is essential that you build your swing so that it will be consistent over time no matter of the iron that you have selected. Of course it is essential that golf is suppose to be fun so take a moment to appreciate the beauty surrounding you and the company of friends and your golf game will develop naturally.
