Is Portugal Going To Be Your Next Golf Holiday Destination?

Golf holidays in Portugal have long been one of the most sort after, thanks to the top quality courses, hotels and resorts that line the Portuguese coastline. The Algarve is renowned for its golf, and also benefits from a fantastic year round climate that is perfect for foreign golf holiday.

Towns like Vilamoura are best for catering for larger groups of golfers. Vilamoura has a great nightlife that is based around the marina, but in addition to this Vilamoura has seven championship courses to choose from. The Algarve has a large variety of courses to chose from. Some of the best are the resorts of Penina and Dona Filipa, hosting one of the country's best courses in San Lorenzo and the newer Monte Rei development in the east of the Algarve.

If you are prepared to make a longer journey, sunny golf holidays are to be found on the charming island of Madeira, but the emerging star of Portuguese golf is the Lisbon coast. The Atlantic shoreline has awe-inspiring courses including Oitavos, in addition to first class golf resorts like Quinta da Marinha and Praia D'El Rey. With the old favourites being supplanted by fantastic new venues, golf in Portugal is as popular as ever, and remains one of the best destinations for a golf holiday in the sun.

The expansion of low cost airline routes has meant the coast around Portugal's capital city has become a great golfing escape. Now Lisbon is beginning to come on par with its close rival the Algarve who has for a long time been the European destination of choice. Established resorts to the south of Lisbon such as Aroeira and new resorts like Praia D'El Ray and Campo Real have placed the region on the golfing map. Top quality courses such as Oitavos and Quinta da Marinha mean that while playing some of the best courses in Europe, you can also take in some of the genuine Portuguese culture. The city of Lisbon is a vibrant hub of cultural activity with a mix of traditional Portuguese charm coupled with the young thriving urban environment.

The Algarve has become well known for its collection of top quality championship golf courses all along the coast. Faro can be reached from most international and major airports, and is within an hour of most of the destinations in the Algarve. Highlights in the Algarve include the Nicklaus designed resort at Monte Rei at Tavira and others like San Lorenzo and Quinta Do Lago. However the biggest star in the Algarve is the resort of Vilamoura, a harbour town that has been transformed into a superb comprehensive golfing resort.

Madeira, located off the North West coast of Africa, benefits from the a superb year round climate and has long been known as a good holiday destination. Spectacular mountain views are characteristic of the island and add to its natural beauty. The capital of Funchal has a blend of vibrant new tourism culture mixed with traditional Madeiran culture. Madeira has some fantastic hotels and two good quality golf courses. The European tour event, the Madeira Open, is hosted annually at the Santo da Serra golf course, attracting some of the tours best players, while the Palheiro golf club has some wonderful views over the capital city and the surrounding mountains and coastline. Madeira is truly on the golfing map and can rival the Canary Island and the Portuguese mainland as a great place for a golf holiday in the sun.
