Perfect Golf Swing: Pre Shot Drill

Posted by Sophia Martinez under: Golf .

Here is a great tip for grooving the perfect golf swing that I got from watching professional baseball players.

After watching Sunday TV a few weeks I made an odd connection between the world of golf and baseball. Initially I was watching a baseball highlights show which did a brief piece about a charity golf event which several baseball players had attended. One of the baseball players made the rye remark that a lot of guys from baseball enjoy their golf and are often long hitters off the tee.

A short while later the Open highlights were being shown and I spotted that the Spanish golfer Miguel Angel Jimenez has a pre-shot swing that more closely resemble a baseball swing than a golf swing. His stance remained quite upright and the club head dropped only as far as knee height. This was a eureka moment for me as I could see how the baseball swing, when used as a pre-shot drill in golf, encourages a loose flowing swing resulting in a nice snapping action at the bottom of the swing.

Either way, I've incorporated into my pre-shot routine and it does help loosen up my golf swing and help get the sensation of coiling the core muscles like a spring - just like in baseball.

Why Does This Work So Well?

While a baseball swing and the perfect golf swing may be dissimilar in many ways there are some key elements relating to how powerful shots are made that are similar:

- The golf/baseball swing all starts in the legs. The legs and feet form the stable base adhered to the ground around which the swing must pivot in a controlled manner.

- The core muscles of the body twist during the back swing and are the basis of making a powerful swing (not the arms).

- If the body muscles are tensed up then the transmission of power (from the legs to the core muscles to the arms and finally down through the club) are constrained. A pre-shot drill that focuses on doing a loose golf swing is the ideal way to encourage a smooth rhythmic golf swing.

There are many elements to the perfect golf swing, perhaps too many. Making the effort to complete some practice swings in a baseball-swing style helps loosen up the core muscles and encourages a free-flowing golf swing. At the very least it is worth giving it a try next time you're at the range.
