The Rules – Get To Know The Basics Before You Hit The Golf Course
Posted by Stanley Kessler under: Golf .
If you choose to buy a golf rulebook, you may be shocked at the quantity and the technicality of some of them. There are rules for just about any circumstance you may encounter in a game of golf, and some that seem to cater for obscure and unheard-of situations too. You will need to learn the rules of the specific course as well. This may be based on dress code and out of bounds rules.
No matter how technical or ridiculous a rule may seem, you must understand that all the rules are based on the objective of fair play. The idea is that no-one should have an unfair advantage over another player, or be able to take any advantage other than the one that they gain by playing well. As a beginner or amateur, you will not be expected to learn the entire rule book back to front, but you will need some basic idea before you start playing.
The first four rules that every golfer should know, no matter what level of play they are at are:
1. You finish the hole with the ball you began with.
2. Make sure you are using your own ball. Each player should identify his or her balls with a unique marking.
3. Play the ball where it landed. (No kicking or bumping the ball.)
4. An unplayable ball will present you with three options. Those are: playing from where you hit your last shot, drop a ball within 2 club lengths of where the ball is now, or keep the point where the ball is between you and the ball and drop a ball on that line. All three options will incur a one stroke penalty.
There are rules about how many clubs you may have in your bag, sharing clubs with another player (generally not allowed) and many, many more. Different golfers may approach the rules differently. Some golfers are lax, while others are by the book. Before you bend a rule, check with experienced golfers in the group. It is never a good idea to cheat though - even the most lenient player will not take kindly to that.
You should also learn how to score. This will especially help you if you plan to enter a competition. Different scoring systems will be used in different competitions, so read up!
As with all sports, if you cheat and break the rules in order to turn in a better score, you are really only cheating yourself. Hiding a few strokes to turn in a better result may get you a better prize in the clubhouse that night, but it certainly won't help you improve your game. Every golfer has good days and bad days, but you can't increase the good days by cheating.
Golf is a gentleman's game, and should be played with manners, graciously and with good sportsmanship. The rules are in place to help everyone, including the experienced ones. This will only hurt your golf game.
