Tips To Stop Topping The Ball Off The Tee
Posted by Chris Pierce under: Golf .
We all have felt the frustration and, no doubt, embarrassment of topping the ball off the tee ( especially if it's the first tee with an audience ) and been left wondering exactly what we might have done wrong.
There are a number of possible causes and these are three of the more common ones:
1)Ball Position - When playing the ball off the tee rather than a ground shot, correct ball position is a vital element. If the ball is too far forward it will cause you too bring the club-face to the ball too late in the swing, meaning the lower portion of the club will address the ball in a higher position causing you to top the ball. How high you have the ball teed up may also effect the manner in which you hit the ball. You should have half the ball showing above the top of the club in order to ensure you hit the ball in the middle of the club. Too low and you may very well top the ball.
2)Incorrect Aim - By not ensuring that you aim is correct and finding yourself aiming too far right will cause you to be pulling out of your shot both too early and too fast. This will cause you to pull up too much and be too centred with your stance in relation to the ball position and this will also affect your weight shift and timing. The nett effect of course is that you are likely to be topping the ball.
3)Too Much Turn in the Backswing - Turning excessively in the backswing will have you in a difficult position as you come through the shot to address the ball by making you swing too long, making it much harder to get the club back out in front of you in the correct manner in the follow through. The club will have to come from the outside to inside position as you complete your swing, pull you more towards the left and cause your weight shift to be reversed and then causing you to top the ball as you attempt to hit the ball correctly.
Equally if you are too far forward, meaning your ball is too far back in relation to your body position, you will be hitting down on the ball and trying at the same time to pull out of the shot early because of your incorrect position, you will no doubt top the ball. Your ability to shift your weight and perfect your timing will be highly compromised.
There is no doubt ball position is a vital part of ensuring you are not topping the ball as it affects all the elements of timing, correct weight shift and stance.
There are always a number of things to work on in your golf game, but don't over complicate things. Where possible go back to the basics and ensure you are paying attention to the simple things such as body position in relation to the ball or ball position. Don't over do the backswing and keep it limited to a 3/4 turn if you need to so that you are not overstretching or overswinging and therefore much more likely to top the ball.
When wanting to improve your golf, these are just some of the many tips available to help you solve those problem areas.
