Using A Golf Divot Repair Tool Shows Respect
Posted by Mary Jo Braun under: Golf .
While persons not involved in the game of golf may have difficulty understanding a sport that is innately as respectful of others as golf, well it is a fact. Golfers are usually a respectful group and this also applies to damage they do to the golf greens. Most golfers carry a golf divot repair tool in order to repair the damage that an iron or a ball hitting with force will do to the greens.
Damage from balls hitting the grass is almost impossible to avoid that is a soft surface and the ball is hitting hard and fast. A player using an iron for a long drive may leave a patch of grass that has been scraped away as well as a scar where the grass was. It is considered appropriate in both those cases that the golfer repair divots they may have left behind.
Divot refers to two types of damage to the turf. In the first type a dent in the ground is made by the impact of the ball hitting the grass. In the second type, grass has actually been scraped from the ground from the force of a club. For the second type of divot repair can be as simple as replacing the plug of grass and tamping it down gently. If the club provides cups of sand on the cart that is usually a hint to use sand to repair the divot.
A slug of turf scraped from the ground usually lies five to fifteen yards in front of the golfer in the direction that the ball went. On the other hand a divot created by the golf ball hitting the surface will be located where the ball first hit the turf and not usually where it ends up. When that happens the golfer may want to search the area carefully for the divot as it could be some distance from the spot the golf ball finally stopped at.
On the other hand the divot created by a ball landing can be easily repaired but, a special tool is often used to make the process easy and leave the surface almost unmarred. A divot repair tool will have a pronged end that should be inserted into the divot under the grass. If the divot is just a small depression lifting the grass gently and then smoothing it will be sufficient to recreate an undisturbed and virtually flawless surface.
Though polite behaviour is standard among golfers, those who do not replace or repair divots may get more than just dirty looks from other golfers. In some cases they receive a full course from staff on why divots should be repaired. In extreme instances they might actually be kicked off the course which is sufficient reason for many to carry along a divot repair tool.
The ball repair kit is a small accessory and very inexpensive to purchase. It can help establish the golfer as a polite person and avoid any complications or lectures from the staff at the course. This small tool will also assure the golfer that they left the area as perfect as possible.
